National Water Quality Initiative (NWQI): East and Middle Prongs of the Roaring River

The National Water Quality Initiative is a special water quality program for land in the Middle and East Prong of the Roaring River only.

The program has a focus on 5 main land uses:

  • Forestry
  • Pasture
  • Chicken houses
  • Cropland
  • Stream that are blown out

This area comprises of 13.2% of Wilkes County. All people who own land in this area are eligible to apply for cost share assistance.

What steps to take:

  • The first step is for the landowner to obtain a farm and tract number from the USDA Farm Service Agency.
  • The second step is for the Wilkes Soil and Water Conservation District to develop a conservation plan with the landowner.
  • The third step is for the landowner to sign an application and go through the contracting process.

We have developed 13 conservation plans for 2019 and of those, 10 were signed into contract status obligating $ 504,000.
